Protesters take aim at taxes, socialism

The Fourth of July wasn't all about fireworks, backyard cookouts and fun at the beach.

About 100 people spent about two hours Saturday protesting a range of government-related issues.

The tea party was from noon to 2 p.m. on Ninth Avenue near Creighton Road.

Protesters stood near the intersection holding signs and American flags. Some motorists blew their horns as they passed.

"I am tired of the direction the administration is taking the nation," said Greg Sutton, 44, of Jay. "Socialism does not work. It never has worked. It never will."

Chriss Vinciguera, 62, of Pensacola said she thinks the government is spending too much.

"Mr. Obama is spending way too much money," Vinciguera said. "I wish him the best. I wish he would concentrate on one thing first - fix the economy."

Ross Calloway, 59, with the Florida Fair Tax Education Association spent his time at the protest trying to educate people about a fair tax system.

The fair tax system would, among other things, replace all federal income and payroll-based taxes with a national retail sales tax, according to the Web site FairTax.org.

"It's a better way to finance the government," Calloway said. "The reason it's better is because it's fundamentally, economically stimulative."

Jim Watley, 75, of Pensacola also supports a fair tax system.

"I think the tax system we have now is unfair to people." Watley said. "I don't like the tax system because it's used as a weapon against people. Everybody is not taxed the same."

FairTax Fact: The GAO (Congress's auditing branch) found that all of the exemptions, exclusions, and special favors in the current tax code drain federal receipts by $728 billion each year. That is almost as much as the nation spends on Medicare and Social Security combined and 60% more than the nation spends on national defense. The FairTax eliminates all deductions, credits, and carve-outs to ensure that everyone pays his or her fair share.
